Sweden (officially the Kingdom of Sweden) is located in Northern Europe. It’s the 5th largest country in Europe and the 55th largest in the world with a population of approximately 9 million people (2006). The primary language is Swedish but the majority of people also speak English. Most students study additional languages such as German, French and Spanish.
Sweden has beautiful natural sceneries. The country has approximately 90,000 lakes, most of them located in ‘Norrland’, a major area with forest and mountains that covers about three-fifths of the country. Sweden also has rich plains, valleys, archipelagos and islands. Good transportation systems, excellent communications and a skilled labour force allow the country to commercialize and export its rich natural assets, such as copper, iron ore or timber. The country lies west of the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Bothnia and has a long coastline. In general it has a temperate climate mainly because of the Gulf Stream, but this can vary depending on the region. The northern mountains for example have a sub-Arctic climate.
Stockholm is the largest city and capital of Sweden. It has a strategic location on several islands on the east coast of Sweden and is one of the cleanest cities in the world. Temperatures in Stockholm are extremely varied; due to the high northern latitude the city is exposed to cold winters and mild summers.
In Stockholm and in Sweden in general people enjoy a high standard of living and the Swedish nation has the image of a free-thinking, environmentally-conscious and energy-efficient country. Some economists and socialists claim that the ‘Swedish welfare state model’ is an example of effective use of national taxes, although others disagree about its continuing effectiveness. It is said that the Scandinavian model is based on a mixed economy, i.e. a mid-way between socialism and capitalism.
Stockholm is Sweden's financial centre, with an important service industry and many high technology companies like IBM, Electrolux or Ericsson. Many major brands like the famous clothes retailer ‘H&M’ have headquarters in Stockholm.
Tourism has grown significantly in the last years and has played an important part in the city's economy. Stockholm also houses beautiful ‘UNESCO World Heritage sites’ like the ‘Skogskyrkogården’ (The Woodland Cemetery) and the ‘Royal Palace Drottningholm’.
Sweden has many worldwide famous talents such as Nobel Prize winners Selma Lagerlöf & Harry Martinson, the painters Anders Zorn & Carl Larsson, the sculptor Tobias Sergel, the children’s book writer Astrid Lindgren (creator of the famous character ‘Pippi Longstocking’), actresses Ingrid Bergman, Greta Garbo, Anita Ekberg & Bibi Andersson and the filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, among others. On the other hand Sweden has a famous and rich music tradition. Swedish pop music gained international recognition with the music group ‘ABBA’ that sold almost 400 million records. There are also famous Swedish stores which are successful in many countries around the world, like the clothes store ‘H&M’ (Hennes & Mauritz) and the low-cost furniture store ‘IKEA’.
