About Villanueva / Brunete, Madrid

Villanueva de la Cañada is a municipality in Spain, located 30 km west (and slightly north) of the city of Madrid. It has 14 809 inhabitants (2006) but during weekends and holidays the population is much higher. It limits with Valdemorillo and Villanueva del Pardillo to the north, with Majadahonda, Boadilla del Monte and Villaviciosa de Odón to the east, with Brunete to the south and with Quijorna to the west.
 
It has an area of 34.3 km². It has several residential areas such as Guadamonte, La Raya del Palancar, Villafranca del Castillo and la Mocha Chica.
 
Brunete is a town outside Madrid, Spain. There was a major battle, fought there during the Spanish Civil War. The battle, while a stalemate, was seen as a tactical victory for the Spanish Nationalist Forces. Francisco Franco is known to have gone hunting there during his rule. It is located 28 km. from the centre of Madrid and has 9.411 inhabitants (2007).
 
Brunete is among the 10 most developed towns of Madrid, together with Pozuelo de Alarcón, Majadahonda, Las Rozas, Boadilla del Monte, Villanueva de la Cañada, Villaviciosa de Odón, Torrelodones and Galapagar.
