About Sierra Oeste / El Escorial, Madrid

El Escorial is a municipality in the Autonomous Community of Madrid, located 45 km (28 mi) northwest of the Spanish capital Madrid. Its population in 2003 was 12,669. The area has a RENFE (Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles - Spanish National Railway Network) train station connecting the area to Madrid.
 
The famous Royal Seat of San Lorenzo de El Escorial also known as Monasterio de El Escorial or El Escorial, is located in the adjacent municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
 
San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a municipality in the Autonomous Community of Madrid, near the Spanish capital of Madrid. Its population in 2002 was 13,162.
 
Situated northwest of the capital, it is the site of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen. It is also the home of popular summer courses of the Universidad Complutense.
 
The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is one of the Spanish royal sites and functions as a monastery, royal palace, museum and school.  El Escorial comprises two architectural complexes of great historical and cultural significance: El Real Monasterio de El Escorial itself and La Granjilla de La Fresneda, a royal hunting lodge and monastic retreat about five km away.
 
The Valle de los Caídos (in English: Valley of the Fallen) is a monumental memorial in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, erected at Cuelgamuros Valley in the Sierra de Guadarrama, near Madrid, conceived by Spanish dictator Francisco Franco to honour those who fell during the Spanish Civil War.
