About Sierra Norte, Madrid

The Sierra Norte de Madrid is a region defined by the ‘Guía de Turismo Rural y Activo’ (Guide for Rural Tourism). It’s located at the north of Madrid city centre; it has a total of 1265 km ², 17,000 inhabitants and 42 towns.

In the Sierra Norte de Madrid there are two main areas: the mountain area including the mountains Somosierra, Sierra del Lobosillo, La Cabrera, La Morcuera and part of Guadarrama; and the countryside area in south-east.

The main river in the Sierra Norte is called Lozoya, which course is interrupted by five reservoirs (Pinilla, Riosequillo, Puentes Viejas, El Villar y El Atazar). That is the reason why the zone is a very important source of water for the city of Madrid.

The most important economical activities in the Sierra Norte are agriculture, farm animals and tourism.
