About Poble Nou, Barcelona

Many years ago it used to be a green area full of lakes and marshes. Later Poblenou became an important industrial quarter with textile, metal, gas, oil and food industries - among many others. At the end of the 19th century Poblenou became on of the most industrialized areas in Spain and people started to call it the ‘Catalan Manchester’. In the 60s the industries started to leave the neighbourhood and the big sites were the factories used to be located were soon occupied by workshops, transport companies and warehouses.
The big transformation and restoration of Poblenou started with Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. Nowadays this transformation continues and there’s a new project called 22@ that is turning the old industrial Poblenou into a new modern district. Poblenou has become an up-coming district that is expected to hold a business area, a university area and a residential area.
