About Pedralbes, Barcelona
Pedralbes is a smart and expensive neighbourhood of Barcelona that belongs to the Les Corts district. The name Pedralbes comes from Petras Albas or Piedras Blancas (white stones) and refers to the distinctive light-coloured rocks of the area.
This wealthy area of Barcelona has many old and new mansions and smart houses surrounded by gardens. Avenida Pearson, one of the most exclusive avenues of the city, is located in Pedralbes. To western end there is also a small neighbourhood built in 1946 called La Merce.
In 1327 the Queen Elisenda de Montcada (4th wife of Jaume II) chose the barrio to build what is now one of the most valuable Catalan Gothic constructions – the Monasterio de Pedralbes (Pedralbes Convent). Pedralbes area has other beautiful and interesting sites as well, like Parque Cervantes – CervantesPark -, the Pedralbes Royal Palace and Gardens, the University Area Campus Norte (North campus) and the beautiful Finca Guell (Guell country house) designed by the major exponent of Catalan Modernism Antoni Gaudi. This finca has a famous entrance with an amazing iron dragon.
