About Ensanche, Barcelona
The Ensanche neighbourhood (Eixample is actually the Catalan name - ‘Ensanche’ is the name in Spanish) was constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries and it is famous for being heavi ...more details >ly influenced by modernist architects. The area is home of some of the most important and unique masterpieces of the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (Antoni Gaudí i Cornet his full name, 1852 – 1926, architect from Cataluña who belonged to the Modernisme/Art Nouveau movement).
The Ensanche neighbourhood is located between the old city called Ciutat Vella and other areas of Barcelona such as Sants and Gracia (what were once surrounding small towns).
La Casa Milà – also known as La Pedrera – is an outstanding building of Barcelona, Spain designed and constructed by Antoni Gaudi between 1906 and 1910. It is located in the smart avenue Paseo de Gracia, one of the most emblematic and exclusive streets in the Ensanche district.
La Pedrera is a fantastic construction with curves and undulating forms, twisted balconies and very few straight planes. It’s a typical gaudiana masterpiece that differed from the traditional canons and the neo-gothic or neo-romantic styles. La Pedrera – or Casa Milà – is one of the most visited places in Barcelona and was declared world heritage by UNESCO on the 2nd November 1984.
La Casa Batllo was built between 1905 and 1907 by the greatest exponent of Catalan Modernism, Antoni Gaudi. It is one of the most surprising and famous buildings in Barcelona and a major tourist attraction in the Ensanche district.
The Casa Batllo is located at number 43 of the elegant Paseo de Gracia Avenue. In this avenue of the Ensanche area you can find some of the most beautiful buildings of Barcelona as well as famous international stores.
La Manzana de la Discordia (Block of Discord or L'Illa de la Discordia in Catalan) is one of the most famous blocks of the Modernist Ensanche district of Barcelona. La Manzana de la Discordia gets its name because of the very different styles of the buildings in the block: Casa Lleó Morera by Lluís Domènech i Montaner (Paseo de Gracia 35), Casa Amatller by Josep Puig i Cadafalch next door to Gaudí’s creation 'La Pedrera' (Paseo de Gracia 41), Casa Mulleras by Enric Sagnier Villavecchia (number 37), Casa Delfina Bonet by Marceliano Coquillat Llofriu (number 39) and of course Antoni Gaudi’s Casa Batlló.
Ildefons Cerdà i Sunyer (1815 - 1876) was the Catalan urban planner who designed the Ensanche neighbourhood. His work is considered visionary and pioneering – while designing the Ensanche area he not only considered traffic and transport, but also other factors such as sunlighting and ventilation. The result was his characteristic octagon-shaped blocks: the streets broaden at every intersection offering more visibility and better ventilation. Nowadays this innovative shape of the blocks also results in having more parking spaces.
The Ensanche is characterized by long straight streets, a strict grid pattern crossed by wide avenues. The most important avenues in this area are Paseo de Gracia (Passeig de Gràcia in Catalan), Avenida Diagonal and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes. Paseo de Gracia is an elegant street where many international designers’ stores are located. It links centric Plaza Cataluña (Plaça Catalunya in Catalan) with Gracia area.
Some parts of the Ensanche - especially in the fringe zones - have some old decaying buildings completely different from the modernist richness of the rest of the neighbourhood.
