About Ciutat Vella, Barcelona

This ...more details >interesting area of Barcelona is formed by four charismatic neighbourhoods: Barceloneta, Raval, Gótico and Sant Pere, Santa Caterina y la Ribera. Barceloneta, Raval and Gotico have such importance and personality of their own that you’ll find a separate section for each one of them (see the general list of Barcelona’s zones). In the fourth neighbourhood of Ciutat Vella we find the famous and unique area of Barcelona known as Born. In Born there’s a unique mix between old-fashion charm and the latest fashion tendencies. Some of the coolest designer’s shops – clothes, furniture, accessories, etc. – are located in Born, including the famous clothes store 'Custo Barcelona'. This brand is admired world-wide for its original modern designs. It was created by the brothers David and Custodio Dalmau in 1996. Custo first collection was shown in 1997 in New York and had a great success. The brand soon became a creative icon and it was promoted by celebrities as Penelope Cruz or Julia Roberts. Custo designs have also been worn by characters of fashion-orientated TV shows as Sex and the City and Friends.
In general Ciutat Vella still preserves its medieval structure. It has small, twisted and narrow streets. Many of them are really charming but others are not very clean or really pleasant to walk through. The historic centre used to be the suburbs of the old Roman Barcelona and there are still amazing constructions and sceneries that testify to that. In Ciutat Vella you can also admire the valuable historical treasure the ‘Basilica Santa Maria del Mar’ - built between 1329 and 1383.
