Lisbon is the capital & largest city of Portugal. It’s also a major political, economic & cultural centre and the capital of the Lisbon region, which is the wealthiest region in Portugal.
Lisbon has beautiful constructions with many different architectural styles: Manueline (the Portuguese late Gothic style), Baroque, Romanesque, Modern & Post-Modern. Lisbon also has lovely monuments, squares & boulevards. The charming centre of the city is being considered for UNESCO World Heritage Site status and is called ‘Baixa’ (Downtown). Some of the most famous constructions of Lisbon are the exquisite Manueline ‘Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha’ (Old Church of Our Lady of the Conception), the ‘Belém Tower’ built in the 16th century & one of the most elegant symbols of the city and the ‘Castle of São Jorge’ located in the highest hill of the historic centre.
The Portuguese capital city has a very pleasant weather and is one of the mildest European capitals. Spring months have plenty of sunshine and temperatures between 6 °C and 27 °C and summer is sunny and dry with temperatures between 16 °C to 38 °C. Autumn is mild and winter is rainy, windy and with some nice sunny days.
The Lisbon region produces 45% of the Portuguese GDP (gross domestic product). Lisbon houses most of the multinationals operating in Portugal and has a well-developed mass media sector including leading television networks and newspapers. It also has a good public transport network that includes metro, buses and trams, its most traditional public transport.
